The Balancer

Neither library nor afterparty.

You're comfortable in the middle: dinner together some nights, quiet when it's time, reasonable tidiness.

One of Roomealo's eight living profiles. If you recognise yourself, you probably are one.

How someone with the The Balancer profile lives

There's no fixed shape to your day at home, and that's the point. Some nights you're in the kitchen with whoever's around; others you eat at your desk and nobody minds. You tidy as you go, not to a standard but enough that nothing builds up. You'll have a friend over now and then, and you'll be fine if a flatmate does the same. Your bedtime moves with the week rather than the clock.

You're the person who makes a mixed household work. You can absorb a loud weekend and a silent one without either bothering you much, and you'll usually be the first to suggest a middle way when two flatmates want opposite things. You raise problems early enough that they're still small, and you'll bend on the details as long as the overall deal feels fair. People rarely have a complaint about you, and rarely a strong opinion either.

What wears you down is being the only one who bends. In a house where everyone else is at an extreme — one insists on silence, another on Friday parties — you end up as the buffer, and buffers get tired. You can also drift: because nothing bothers you much, you don't push for agreements, and then you inherit whatever rules the loudest person set. You're not always sure yourself what you'd fight for until it's gone.

What to ask at the viewing if you're a The Balancer

  1. 1.How do you handle it when two of you want different things, say one wants quiet and one wants people over? Can you give me a recent example?
  2. 2.How are the shared jobs split at the moment, and how did that come about: a conversation, or just habit?
  3. 3.What's the thing about this flat that the last person to move out found hardest?
